Girl Power

There was once when I chatted with the chief chef of Pasta Cafe and we somehow drifted to how the kitchen is run on a naval vessel. Tell him everything and I might find myself serving pasta to military policemen one day. After a bit of self-censorship, I managed to tell him about this very famous chef I heard of who cooks so well that the Navy sent him for some SHATEC courses. After he completed the courses, COs just pray that he will be posted to their ships. Out at sea, nothing boost the morale more effectively than food. His culinary skills is praised by many personnel and his paycheck is considered one of the fattest among the chefs. However, he does have a problem. He loves to slap at his ship crews' backside when asking them for their comments on his food or other trivial matters.... other body movements also do not suggest that he is as masculine as he should be.
Hearing this, my chief chef immediately remarked that he is not a man and that is his competitive edge. Genuinely speaking, from past experiences since Primary 1, I cannot find reasons to say he is wrong. Consider also the below paragraph which I extracted from a book by my favourite management guru, Tom Peters:

"In 1996, there were 8.4 million women and 6.7 million men in American colleges; by 2007, that disparity will have grown to 9.2 million women versus 6.9 million men. Moreover, more of the women stick around and finish.....
Almost everywhere you look, the numbers tell a compelling tale. (Yes, guys, the numbers. This isn't touchy-feely, wishy-washy stuff you can brush aside with your "just the facts, ma'am" attitude.) For example:
- There are far more girls in student government than boys.
- There are far more girls in honor societies than boys.
- Girls read far more books.
- Girls outperform boys in tests of artistic and musical ability.
- Girls study abroad at a higher rate.
Yikes! But don't despair fellas. We still rule in some areas. Namely: Crime and violence of all varieties. Alcohol abuse. Drug use. Learning disabilities."
The strike rate is not reflected in the survey and forecast. It would be more alarming if he says that 12 million women are offered opportunities for decent learning and 9.2 million made it to college. Whereas, 15 million men are offered the same opportunities and only 6.9 million made it to college. The figures are made up but does anyone dare to deny it does not conform to reality?

Removal of False Wisdom

This is my thanks to dental surgeon, Dr. Sitoh Ling for highlighting me of the decay of one of my wisdom teeth during a periodic check-up and the successful removal of them just now.

At such “ripe old age”, this is the first time I have my tooth extracted by a dentist, or now more proudly known as dental surgeon. Never thought the extraction of the back teeth, which are said to be stronger, is done so smoothly. Within 30 minutes, I am out of the clinic with my false wisdom removed. They have not bothered me much yet, but problems are foreseeable. There is no better time to remove them than now when I am still very much a student.

Dr. Sitoh Ling B.D.S. (Singapore) practices in Yishun Central Branch of the Pinnacle Dental Group, opposite Yishun 81 Coffeeshop at ground floor of multi-storey carpark. For appointment, please call 67572202.

I have heard of good things about this clinic even before my first visit so if you are overdue for a dental check-up, you can head there. The good thing about this clinic is not much people know about their good dental practice and reasonable pricing and that makes arrangement of appointments easier and waiting time shorter.

Jockeys

Which is P. C. Wu?

Found my old research articles on horses and horse-racing while disposing old items to create space. Those research were done during my secondary school days to write a story based on horse-racing to kill time. The deed is inspired by some of the most colourful races and people I have witnessed or know during my stint at the old Bukit Timah Turf Club. And among the pile of papers, I found some pictures of jockeys The above 2 stand out. It is only now that I realised that I share some common features as the above jockeys.

The one on the left is I. Saifudin - One of the famous jockeys who enjoys consistent form, but is never too sensational. The other one is Singaporean-champion jockey, J. Saimee. He has topped the jockeys' charts a few times in the past 10 years since I know of his existence and has won quite about all featured races on the local racing calendar. Both are still racing.
“To pilot a racehorse is to ride a half-ton catapult. It is without question one of the most formidable feats in sport. The extraordinary athleticism of a jockey is unparalleled: A study of the elements of physicians found that of all major sports competitors, jockeys may be, pound for pound, the best overall athletes.”

Revisiting my NYJC

I have an intention of revisiting my JC days after my examinations and compile my struggles, success, failures, laughters, cries and all sort of experiences that have make of me today into a book. At a young age of 16, that is by far my toughest and interesting moments which are unknown to many. Those days have taught me valuable lessons and up to today, references are made to those experiences for many decisions I make. They changed my attitude.

If the intention is really put to action, I would probably stay at my aunt's house in Serangoon, near NYJC, for 3 or 4 days to put everything on paper. Publish them myself and give to only my handful of best friends. It is not a show of my achievements.... I failed more than I succeed. Neither is it an exhibit of my threshold to rejects and failures. Writing it out is for historic purpose and a way to force myself to reflect and then look forward again. Giving it to best friends is basically to share my moments with them.... it can be just that simple, especially when again, they are my loved ones.... children.... grandchildren.... great-grandchildren....

That's What Friends Are For by Dionne Warwick

And I never thought I'd feel this way
And as far as I'm concerned
I'm glad I got the chance to say that I do believe I love you

And if I should ever go away
Well then close your eyes and try
To feel the way we do today and then if you can remember

Keep smilin' keep shinin'
Knowing you can always count on me for sure
That's what friends are for
For good times and bad times
I'll be on your side forever more
That's what friends are for

Race Commentary

Marathon Finishers, 2892 P. C. and 4063 Edwin Posted by Hello

Reached the start point later than expected due to Edwin forgetting to bring the most important things for this event – Number tag and Championchip (a device used to record timings). By that time, the race was already into its 20th minute and the Esplanade Bridge in front, without a single soul, was ready for the start of the half-marathon at 6.30am. But wearing the white number tag, we are allowed to start running to catch up with fellow marathoners. Being late turned out to be a blessing in disguise. As we made our way to start running, we had to pass by the elite half-marathoners and as we were passing, a few of them nearer to us gave us pads on the back and cheered for us. Never know they can be so friendly. As we were very much the only moving objects after the start point, the race commentator did not fail to mention us and gave us 10 seconds of fame. We were also privileged to run side by side with the elites when they catch up with us and those same people who were shouting “hoo-hoos!” minutes ago appeared serious, focusing and concentrating on their breathing. That is impressive!

During the first 2km, we were running a bit too fast, probably affected by the elites who were coming and the want to catch up with fellow marathoners. I advised to slow down. However, Edwin must have been quite bothered that we will run a very slow second half and wanted to cover more distance faster in the first half. By the 6th km, I have completely lost sight of him. For the rest of the run till the 22nd km, I am running easy or jogging and kept telling myself that I am doing well. Spotted a Caucasian running on a cake costume to support a charity of his choice. Read about him just now on The Sunday Times that he has extraordinary running experience…. One of which is running some 1,400km in 25 days, covering 57 km per day. By the 23rd km, I managed to catch up with Edwin. Having more reserves, I am able to continue running and left him behind. The next time I see him is at the U-turn at East Coast Park…. About 800m in front of him and then at the finish line. He is not significantly behind when I reached the finish line.

The run around East Coast Park was a struggle. That was between the 23rd km and 31st km. First, my back ached. Due to some back training in the gym, it is not as bad as last year’s. Next, my knees. Then, it is my left ankle (new problem) which was sprained months ago and never fully recover and I believe will never. Then my muscles on my thighs and hamstrings contracted or pulled, giving a sharp pain. I thought it would be better to walk in big steps than to stop to massage and it worked. Spotted a Caucasian encouraging runners and giving funny comments to walkers like “I think I saw you walking!” and “This is easier than NS”.

From the 31st km to the finish line, I walked most of my distance faster than most walkers and slow joggers. Aching on my heels felt. Like last year, I thought to myself that I would not run a marathon again. I did run a bit, but the distance is nothing near 200 metres at a go. I reckoned that for every 1 km covered, only about one-fifth is ran. It was already 11.15am when I reached the 36th km mark and I was thinking of Riccardo and Aijuan who will be waiting at the finish line. Tried to walk faster and run as much as I can to keep them from waiting. The Caucasian spotted at East Coast is now at the Esplanade clapping his hands and telling runners to keep running for the finishing medals about 1 km away.

Shortly afterwards, it is near the finish line. My legs want to stop but I cannot as spectators are looking…. It is the final 100 or so metres anyway. What disappointment when I saw the timer reading “6:09:XX”. Deducting the time lagged due to the later start, I did not improve much, if I improved, compared to last year’s run. More disappointing is that close buddy, Riccardo, is not there to cheer for us at the finishing straight.... must be busy with something. But Aijuan is there, so there is quite enough. Edwin came in about 5 minutes later…. I wondered what our timings would be if he had stuck with me during the earlier part of the run and continue to run together. Would we motivate each other to keep running or give each other excuses to take things easy?

Our participation for this event ended with us collecting our well-deserved finisher’s T-shirts and medals. Would I run the next Singapore Marathon? I cannot tell. But if I am not running, I want to be one of the road-side heros.

Racing Colours for SCSM 2004

Here's my main apparels for the Singapore Marathon 2004: FBT running singlet(pictured above), FBT black running shorts and Asics Cumulus. Finally, my latest FBTs which are not used in the Army Half Marathon will make its appearance in the biggest running event in Singapore.

The shorts was bought about 2 years ago from Sembawang Shopping Centre at $10.00. The singlet was from Carrefour about 4 months ago costing only $7.90. More money is put into my running shoes and socks for obvious reasons. Asics Cumulus has been one of my best investments and I think she could run 1 more year of events before her decommission.

Browsed the Runspiration Guide for SCSM 2004 and learnt of some offerings for race spectators. Something new this year is the free transport services for spectators to scenic and vital points of the race to cheer for your friends or the elite runners. Buses will leave and arrive in batches. Depending on the pace of your friend (or friends, not necessarily me), you can choose to take the batch that will bring you to the point of the race, just-in-time to see your friends run pass. For example, a photographer who wants to take photos of the elite runners can take the first batch of buses and continue with that batch till he is back at the finishing straight. In this way, he will be able to take photos of the elite runners at their different phases of conquest. It is difficult to explain this free service clearer, do visit
www.singaporemarathon.com

I will be back this Sunday evening (you can log on after 8pm) to tell you my interesting discoveries and sightings, what is going through my mind and body throughout the race and, of course, my timing. Will continue my carbo-loading for now. Meanwhile, you enjoy your weekend!

First Singapore Idol

The most recognizable person in town now.... at least for one week, the most printed face on local press…. And the most talked about on radio. Who else could it be, except Taufik Batisah, the first Singapore Idol. We have witnessed some unpolished performance by other contestants during the Spectaculars which require them to sing only 1 song. Taufik has delivered his goods, not 1, but 3 songs, to the right person, right place, right time. His performance tonight is, without a doubt, flawless.

I am always quick to leash out merciless comments about a poor performance to my siblings and normally, they are proved valid by the experts in the field – The 4 judges. This evening, I did not mind keeping quiet as if I am immune to sounds and melodies. Being an open “Sly” supporter, did not want to appear inconsistent by complimenting Taufik at that moment…. But I cannot help shaking my head each time Sylvester performed. There and then, I know Sylvester could not bluff through with his smiles anymore and he knew it. On-off Idols viewers, there will be many and they probably would not even know how these 2 young men ended up in Singapore Indoor Stadium. All things being equal, they are going to vote for sensation…. That is, Taufik.
Will They Disclose the Margin?

To me, Taufik is the most improved contestant and most versatile…. Remember how he rapped a few verses of “Where Is The Love?” by Black-Eyed Pea during the Spectaculars? I am impressed…. Trust me, it is not easy, not that I stutter. But being greener that green grasses around the island, he seems very, very confident that he will be in to the next rounds for whatever reasons and that turns me off.

Sylvester, on the other hand, is unique.... not only the genre of music he sang on the Idols stage, his selection of songs is bold…. Tends to sing difficult songs which, if performed well, will be sensational. This is someone who is not afraid of being different and constantly challenges the norm, or that is what many people think. Definitely an unfound in the music industry and he can well fill the gap. Although he is not a strong vocalist, there is something that makes me want to support him…. Perhaps because he is an underdog.

Lots of unfriendly publicity about this 2 young men recently…. The police reports made against Mrs. Sim…. Olinda’s supporters switching to support Taufik (2 vs 1!!)…. At the end of the day, it is performance over all else and we are presented the worthy winner of the competition - Taufik Batisah.

Singapore Marathon 2004

Dear Family, Relatives and Friends,

I have since run in 2 half-marathons and 1 full-marathon. During my participation, I appreciate the cheers and encouragement received along the distance and at the finishing line from fellow runners and event volunteers.

6 days from now, I will be running my 2nd Singapore Marathon. I hereby request your support. Your support can come in the form of a simple e-mail, telephone call, SMS or a comment on this post. Better still, be at the finish line. With you lending support at the finish line, every breathe I take brings me more strides and every stride covers more distance. Your presence inspires me not to give up.

Running together with me for the 2nd year is Edwin Tan. I believe he shares the same thoughts as to my above message. Your presence is a motivation to me as much as it is to him, and his appreciation to your support is as much as mine.

Edwin and I completed the 42.195km in 5 hours 50 minutes last year. Therefore, 5 hours for this year would be achievable. Every stride we take, we discover, we reflect and we have you in mind.

Thank you for reading and for our kinship and friendship.

Yours Truly,
P. C. Wu.

The Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon will be held this Sunday(5 December), starting at Esplanade Bridge at 6am and ending at The Padang until the last man comes in. Edwin and P. C. are expected to come in at between 1100am and 1115am. For the 2nd year running, close buddy, Riccardo Tan, will radiate his positive energies to all marathon finishers at the finish line. Friends who want to be part of their success can contact them directly with well wishes or to make meeting arrangement. For more information on this event, please visit www.singaporemarathon.com

Wild Rice! presents....

ALADDIN Posted by Hello

Wild Rice! is back with a pantomime this Christmas, following the success of 2003's Cinderel-Lah! As usual, they will be poking fun at some of the issues in Singapore which have been debated inexhaustively in the Parliament, talkshows and even in the S-11 Kopi Shop near you. Their target for ALADDIN is the Singaporeans' 5Cs Dream. For the interest of non-Singaporeans and revision for Singaporeans, 5Cs stands for Cash, Car, Condo, Credit card and Country Club membership.

Are 3 wishes enough to make all 5 C’s come true? Find out in Aladdin, as this much-loved fairy tale is given a hilarious and spirited W!LD RICE Singapura-Pantomime Remix!

All right, no Hossan Leong, no Kumar, no Sheikh Haikel, no Lim Kay Siu, no Neo Swee Lin.... With so many big names missing from the cast of ALADDIN, as compared to last year's Cinderel-Lah!, a virgin to the local art scene wonders how much value could be derive from the time and money to be forgone for this pantomime. What is worse? Ivan Heng, Founder of Wild Rice!, is not the director! Seems like the sales and marketing department has a mountain to climb. To shorten the pain, ALADDIN is initially scheduled to run from 2 Dec to 19 Dec 2004 - only slightly more than 2 weeks.

It is hard to believe how a pantomime could have ended its run even before Christmas eve. But let's be some silly jabronis sometimes to reduce stress. ALADDIN is all over the papers and it will extend its run to 9 Jan 2005 - almost in time for CNY light-up in Chinatown. The sales and marketing fellows may have resorted to the wait-and-see tactic, but the fact that they changed course does shed some light on the growing strength of the smaller names, like Emma Yong, Robin Goh and Chua Enlai. Production team for his pantomime includes that of 'The Revenge of the Dim Sum Dollies'.... Selena Tan, Elaine Chan and Glen Goei.... and how big are these names? Very big. And if these are not enough, they have the Wild Kids! to spice things up.... wow, I want to "T-loan" them for my wedding.... copyright reserved BigOsmallR. With the Christmas light-up along Orchard Road becoming more and more like some sort of "going through the motion", it brings comfort to know Singaporeans now have their own pantomime to bring on the festive moods.

Talking about the Orchard Road Christmas light-up, it will be extended too, albeit geographically to Marina Bay. Oh, please, it is not the length that matters, it is the substance.

ALADDIN will be performed in Jubilee Hall, part of Raffles Hotel, opposite Bras Basah Complex, next to Raffles City Shopping Centre, diagonally facing Carlton Hotel and Chijmes...., from 2 Dec 2004 to 9 Jan 2005, except Mondays. Tickets for ALADDIN is available at all Sistic outlets (as usual~) and priced at $45 and $35. My advice is to just get the $35 tickets unless you want to see whether the magical lamp is 'Made in China'. Some of you would wonder how you should dress for a musical. You do not have to dress fancily. T-shirt and jeans is safe enough.

Are 3 wishes enough to make all 5 C's come true? Find out in ALADDIN. Check www.sistic.com.sg

Singapore Motorshow 2004

Arrived at Level 4 of Suntec International Convention and Exhibition Centre at 11.30am for the biennial Singapore Motorshow and left the exhibition at 4.20pm a highly-satisfied visitor. Having been to countless motorshows since my secondary school days (or the days when race queens only appear on TV), my visit for this exhibition is the lengthiest. You see, SM 2004 have so much to offer.... if (ideally) I have to take pictures of 70% of all exhibits of luxurious cars, concept cars and vintage models.... conduct driver's seat test on 60% of all exhibits of consumer cars.... watch adrenaline-pumping stunt performance by World No. 1 Precision Driver, Russ Swift, 2 times.... photo-taking of all the Race Queens (!!!) plus some miscellaneous exhibits and events, I will still be at the exhibtion hall, camping for the night. One need 2 days to call it an exhibition well-visited. The $10 entry fee is certainly worthy, especially when visitors are offered Nescafe.... free flow!!

Many exhibits to look at, but most of my attention is concentrated on the race queens. For your information, the appearance of race queens in local motorshow only started in the year 2000, in a japanese car show held at Expo. The previous motorshows only features cars and more cars.... which I did not find dull. In fact, back in the good old days, without even a camera to take pictures, my friend-cum-regular exhibition companion and I looked seriously at every car and take every opportunity to take the driver's sit and car-opener tests.... and brochures are must-takes. Have to say that the appearance of the race queens in motor shows has changed visitors' visiting patterns and priorities in car shows.... and now, the curves that attracts are not really that of a Ferrari or a Porsche. I would even dare conclude that many would not even be in the show, if not of the race queens.

But it is not a bad thing. On the contrary, I marvel at the appearance of race queens in car shows. If we really want to do any research on cars, we have the internet. Compared to the yesteryears, we are more updated of developments in the car-buying market with more spaces devoted to motoring on newspapers and more motoring magazines. Nowadays, we even have car dealers selling their 'wares' in pasar malams. Without the race queens, I would not see much reasons to visit a car show. These babes are not there to sell their smiles.... also, I think cars dealers are not really there to sell their cars too.... these shows are all about brand-building and changing of perceptions. Most importantly, these race queens, like bar-top dancers, make Singapore a more happening place to live in.

So I can be forgiven for my failure in all achievable tasks in the show, except photo-taking of race queens. And yes, with the introduction of a digital camera in my family, I am able to take pictures and a record number of 228... of cars and humans in 5 hours. Numbers numbers, it is my nature to choose the best of all based on numbers.... my love for statistics struck again and I am to conclude who is the best race queen. One photo I took of a race queen earns her a point and the one with the most points is the race queen of all. Individual photo and photo with me or my friends are allocated one point. If two race queens appeared in one photo, each will get 1/4 point. And they must be in the same outfit. The results and beautiful faces are uploaded below. Have a fun time oogling and reading my short comments. For all that flirting by my camera, I might have to dodge the falling axe of my missus now. I hope to see you again. (Run......)

Mazda, Ms. Girl-Next-Floor Posted by Hello

Points: 9.75. The Mazda girls only appear once every 10 minutes for about 5 minutes, compared to the others who stand at their respective stations for at least 20 minutes at a go. So everytime the "zoom-zoom-zoom" plays and they appear, they create a hype. These girls know how to pose with cars and they never stay in the same position for more than 10 seconds. That encourages me to take photos of them in different poses. Ms. Girl-Next-Floor ranks higher in terms of looks and posture than her partner, Ms. Girl-Next-Doll, and thus more photos of her.

Lexus, Ms. Elegance Posted by Hello

Points: 8.00. This is one of the most beautiful race queens in the car show on photo, only if you do not use the flash. Use it, and you will regret for the rest of your life. And please, no close-ups. High ranking consider that she does her stuff to slow music of piano.... which means she has to be as elegant a.k.a. static as possible. Everytime I put her in my camera's LCD screen, I only want to make things right. Very friendly with my camera.... never complain when I took so much picture of her.

Nissan, Ms. Bare Back Posted by Hello

Points: 8.00. I wonder how she got here. Perhaps it is her bare-back outfit. If there is a best-dressed category, she would have won. Maybe it is the good lighting that encourages me to take more photos of her. The numbers are not telling the truth.

Suzuki, Ms. Thailand Posted by Hello

Points: 8.00. If Ms. Bare-Back is a wonder, this must be a miracle. Maybe it is towards the end of my visit and I am anxious to use up all my memory in the camera. Did not pose very well in a few photos.... but made amend when tasked to station at the above car. Looks like a thai, doesn't she? Nothing much to say about her.... just very lucky.

Suzuki, Ms. Sweet Smile Posted by Hello

Points: 7.00. This is the race queen with the sweetest smile I have seen in the show. Has the face of a girl who every boys want to show their mothers. Don't put your hopes too high.... the girl is possible engaged.... click on the picture and look at the ring on her 4th finger, left hand (or should it be in which hand?). No wonder, she poses in the same position.... showing her left arm prominantly. Or maybe, she just want to stop men from pestering her. She is not available, dudes.... how heart-breaking. Just enjoy the view.

Yamaha, Ms. LiLian Posted by Hello

Points: 7.00. This race queen deserve commendation. First, posing for a motorcyle dealer.... a minority in the show. Second, posing for a stingy motorcyle dealer who don't want to spend money to design his booth. Third, posing for a stingier-than-we-thought motorcyle dealer who dress her only in T-shit and mini-skirt. This young-looking girl has come far, grabbing 7 photos from the big girls. Her strength lies in her ability to pose well with a motorbike and her "ah-lian" image. They go together. A few photos are so hot.... I can't put them here considering that this is a family blogspot. Somehow, I have this intention of cronwing her the best race queen, but the statistics tell otherwise and it is fair. Not that pretty, but goes very well with a motorbike. Looking like someone you see on the street, one has better chance of being her boyfriend.... thus the day-dreamings.

Best Teamwork goes to Subaru Race Queens. They portray a consistent image.... all of them beautiful, all of them tall, all of them friendly, all of them in same outfits and all gesture excuse me when someone interrupts the photo-taking by requesting to take a photo with them (the plank is always not there when I need it!). Possibly due to their exceptional beauty and near distance, I find it very hard to stablise my camera and am not comfortable with taking too many shots of them. Heaven must be missing some angels.

The Singapore Motorshow 2004 will be on until 21 November 2004. Visit www.motorshow.com.sg

Mamma Mia! Here I Go Again.

My first time in Esplanade Theatre - 06 Nov 2004, MAMMA MIA!. VOULEZ-VOUS!!! Unable to tell you the exact meaning of that word.... Cannot find it inside the Times-Chambers Essential English Dictionary, the nearest "Making Difficult Words Sound Easier" book I can get my hands on. From my years of English writing (as if I am an expert), that word looks and sounds more than positive.

But the visit does not come easy.... at a time during the last couple of weeks, I thought I would never get to enter the Theatre for the next few years and never get to watch Mamma Mia! for the rest of my life. What happen? Well, my girlfriend and I mistook the date of the show and on the eve of it when I am about to have a look at the ticket and sing "I HAVE A DREAM", I had a shock of my life. The tickets were for the previous Saturday!! I cannot believe how I missed it, like an apple SLIPPING THROUGH MY FINGERS. So hahaha, those inspirational books help. How did it happen? We initially intend to watch on a particular Saturday, but an earlier show offered better seats. Got the tickets of that earlier show, without updating our organisers of all sorts. And it is very kind of Sistic to give their customers ticket holder upon purchase to protect the tickets from rain and shine and from customers' sight and then their mind. It proved to be very 'useful'. DOES YOUR MOTHER KNOW? No, but after having this published, she may, and I will know who the hell let the cat out. So we paid those MONEY, MONEY, MONEY for a valuable lesson and another item in my business plans folio named "What I Can Do For The World?".

Without procastinating, we bought another pair of tickets. Comptemplating missing Mamma Mia! would be tougher and who would think the devil would still know what we did during OUR LAST SUMMER. Well, we almost did.... or rather, if we err for the 6 Nov show, it will purely be by my overlook. We remembered the date by heart.... I even had it displayed prominantly on my desk.... but I almost forget this: November is one of the months when I may be mobilized by my re-service unit anytime, 99.99% on weekends. At least, we can do something. S.O.S. messages were sent to the appropriate persons to get the tickets out of our hands at a loss, but to no avail. Then I thought perhaps I can give it to my girlfriend's sister. At least the seat would not be left empty and the act of giving itself can be rewarding. After much thought, I think I should just take a risk and hope there will be no mobilization. Another weekend of mine in November has been booked for revision courses.... it is either I miss the show or that part of the course, or maybe I would not miss anything. Can you tell me THE NAME OF THE GAME? Call it "THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL".

On the afternoon of 6 Nov, my girlfriend and I went to Esplanade Theatre and hope that I would not receiving an sms from my re-service unit saying, "We are UNDER ATTACK and since you are ONE OF US, you are to report to camp immediately! Remember to bring your ID tag for identification.... we have a few unidentified dead bodies here and you don't want to be one later." Of course, I am exaggerating. But again, any sms from camp would shatter my dream of watching the musical and leave me walking away like a zombie. And anyone who sees me in that state would want to sing to me, "CHIQUITITA, tell me what's wrong....". LAY ALL YOUR LOVE ON ME, Lady Luck and yes, she did. Past 3pm and no sms, KNOWING ME KNOWING YOU (my re-service unit), I am safe.

With that, I am ready to rock to the music of Abba's DANCING QUEEN. SUPER-TROUPER, the cast of Mamma Mia! (Singapore) is. No one can be wrong with Abba's music. The acting is absolutely flawless. And the dancing makes one wonder whether they are actors, singers or dancers.... what talent. Already towards the end of their tour and they show no sign of tireness or slack due to familiarity. And the props impressed me much.... Simple yet transformative. Enjoyed the show.... I DO, I DO, I DO, I DO, I DO, although for the first 45 minutes, I seem constipated with all that thoughts of mobilization. The Theory of Relativity was working.... the 2.5 hours spent in the theatre seems like 1.5. Good times always past exceptionally soon. The musical is closed with a medley of Abba's best songs that sent the audience dancing. To the cast and production team, THANK YOU FOR THE MUSICal.

This is an "Got-money-cannot-miss" musical and I highly recommended this to all my audience here. Tickets are still available and the show will be running until 3 December 2004. And that is my road to Esplanade Theatre for Mamma Mia! and all the songs featured in capital letter.... well, almost all.... WATERLOO!.... and that complete the list of songs featured in the musical. Wish you head down to sistic for the tickets and upon purchase of tickets, throw that silly ticket holder away.

I served in the Republic of Singapore Navy

"I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: 'I served in the United States Navy.'"

Thinking Aloud

" 'Consider these two stories. Which is closer to yours? You wake up everyday and work from Monday to Friday, and often Saturday too. If you finish your work early, you and your partner go to your parents' place for dinner and see your children for a few hours. If you work late, you buy a packet of char kway teow from the hawker centre... You're not crazy about your job but you know that if you keep it, you can afford a car in three years' time and, in five years' time, buy a condo. Your conversations with people are either for the purpose of networking, work or for familial obligations you cannot avoid. On weekends, you play golf with your friends at your country club or watch a movie with your partner. Once a year, you go on a 10-day vacation to New York, London or Paris.

Alternatively, you wake up and you have no idea what is going to happen today, tomorrow, six months or a year later. Ironically, because of this uncertainty, all possibilities exist for you. You can be prime minister of Singapore, you can make a movie, you can cook a meal you have never cooked before... you can skip instead of walk. You have conversations with people who set your heart palpitating and your mind on fire. Your weekday is no different from your weekend because everyday you are thinking, creating and, more important, imagining.

Most of us recognise the first story and its pursuit of the five C's.... It is the Plan, which imposes a conculsion on you, and you work in order to make all the pieces fit... A Dream, on the other hand, carries you on its wings to worlds that your heart and mind have never known.' "

The above is adapted from from 'Thinking Allowed? politics, fear and change in Singapore' by Warren Fernandez (without prior permission, as usual). The book is a collection of essays drawn from the 'Thinking Aloud' columns on Singapore politics and society published in The Straits Times. These essays delve into the recurrent themes and issues that Singaporeans have been grappling with over the years, and are likely to do so for a long time to come.

'Thinking Allowed?' and other books discussing the issues of Singapore are available in all major bookstores and the National Library. Searching for the particular book you want to borrow has never been easier since donkey years ago. Just log on to eLibraryHub (www.elibraryhub.com), sign up as a member for free and start looking for the book you want. Reserve it at a nominal fee and have it collected at any library convenient for you.

Reminder: First-time voters, we soon will be. In the meantime, think aloud on the above adaptation or adaption, whatever you call it.

Higher

Here we go, here we go now

I saw a boy today
Could tell from what he say
He was a liar
He walks a wire
I tried to make him see
That this was not the way
Of getting higher
And then he turned away, so I say hear me now
Just understand, don't get me wrong
You got to live your life, live it right,
Or you'll go back to the end of the line

Higher step it up, higher just do it right and go
Higher keep it up, higher just pick it up and you go
Higher move along, higher get off the ground
Higher lift it up, higher

There is a girl I know
And everyplace she'd go she'd take your money
Think it was funny
She'd like to get her way, she never likes to pay
The law would chase her
But she just run away, so I say hear me now
Just understand, don't get me wrong
You got to live your life, live it right,
Or you'll go back to the end of the line

Higher step it up, higher just do it right and go
Higher keep it up, higher just pick it up and you go
Higher move along, higher get of the ground
Higher lift it up, higher here we go, here we go now

I got a friend who lives on all the love he gives
When he retires, he's going higher
One thing I know is true, that everything you do
Will come back to you, don't let it fool you
And I say hear me now
Just understand, don't get me wrong
You got to live your life, and live it right,
Or you'll go back to the end of the line
Higher step it up, higher just do it right and go
Higher keep it up, higher just pick it up and you go
Higher move along, higher get of the ground
Higher lift it up, higher here we go, here we go now

Wedding of R & L (Part II)

The celebration reached its climax with a banquent at Qian Xi Restaurant, near Paya Lebar MRT Station. More brothers.... more friends.... more relatives.... hundreds and hundreds of guests arrived to convey their well-wishes to the newly-wed. As with other weddings, we have the usual Cake-Cutting Ceremony, Champagne Pouring Ceremony, Yam Seng Ceremony.... and even late-comers!! There is no indication of adventure until the karaoke set is brought out.

Guessed it is the hosts' intention to keep their guests entertained. I do find it rather adventurous (even if it is a norm nowadays).... or maybe, risky would be a better word. The risk of having bad singers on stage is high, although most of us would admire their courage. And then, there is a risk of them not singing the right songs for the occasion. A senior sang the song about Ficus (a type of tree).... maybe R & L knew each other under a ficus.... another sang about wild birds.... now, I really cannot make any association. Just as everyone start to search their invitations to check whether they are at the right event.... our very own Ric dished out not one but two loves songs "How Deep Is Your Love" and "Oh, Carol" and 're-assured' everyone that it is a wedding celebration. Save the day, he did. And he did it a second time by singing two more songs "The Moon Represents My Heart" and an English song. Four songs.... that made him the top singer of the night. Ric did urged me to get on stage.... maybe he seen my earlier blog.... "If you have been more persistent, I may give myself a go". Sometimes, I can be a bit passive, but once I get in the mood, it's party time!

Perhaps the most touching moment of the whole celebration came at the end of the banquent when Renhan's father, visibly drunk at that time, hugged Renhan's grandmother and cried uncontrollably. Some people say I can write well.... but I got no idea how to describe or explain such joy in words. When you want to share a joy with someone special and that someone is there to share, "you'll feel so high.... you'll be crying". Something like this. The sight makes me think of my grandparents, especially my maternal grandparents. There are and will be so many joys in my life I thought they would live long enough to celebrate. Isn't that everybody's dream?

With that, I will end my coverage of R & L wedding and look forward to more celebrations of theirs.

Wedding of R & L (Part 1)

The day started early for Renhan and his team of brothers (Very honoured to be part of it).... especially after a night of pre-celebration activity. Now, the pre-celebration activity first.... I have expected a wild night for someone living his last hours as a bachalor. Who knows what freezes a party animal at night? Renhan seems to only have his thoughts on Liting and their wedding celebration. OK, he was the driver. And so, the people who enjoyed the most are his brothers. Yes, they were drunk, but Brothers of the 9 Dragon Clan never fail to rise to the occasion.... looking smart and sharp, nobody would have thought what drunken heads they were the night before.

The brothers were mustered at the stipulated time at Renhan's house and they set off soon after to escort Liting back to Yishun for tea ceremony. And this is when the brothers will be on task to deal with Liting's team of sisters. The scene may sound familiar.... a group of fighting men on guard while entering a cave to kill a monster, only to find nothing upon entry. We were like them.... just very strange how we were not stopped at the entrance. Perhaps I watched too much "Entry Ceremony" on TV. The girls were in Liting's room and they mean business. But nothing stops Renhan's determination, he entered the room eventually, much to Liting's delight. After a few more procedures, we were back in the cars.... heading back to Renhan's house for tea ceremony.

In the meantime, a crowd of relatives had gathered at Renhan's house.... all anxious to have a look at the newly-wed.... with the more senior ones looking forward to drink the tea they were going to present. At the same time, a buffet banquent had already been set up for the guests' enjoyment. The transquil of a working day welcome the noise of celebration, like a long-sailing ship rejoice the sight of land.... for a moment, I thought it was Saturday.... I believe it was so for many people around the neighbourhood.

The brothers, except driver Ric and Andy, were relieved of their duties after the buffet lunch. For R & L (tired of typing the names), the celebration continues.... "See you later, Renhan!". What a good start to the union that would last a lifetime. The last times I was so actively involved in a wedding was during my aunts' weddings.... the door-opener of the bridegroom's car.... my cuteness and handsomeness was already evident at that time. :P

When Will I See The Lights Again?

Today might very well be my last day in ADSS. Only yesterday, I have kept my options open, following a great time with 1E2. After a night's sleep, I am back on earth. I would not say that a decision has been made but circumstances are more in favour of me not going back to any school for relief teaching for the rest of the semester. Fair to my everything I will always be.... however, relief teaching are mostly done at the expense of my studies.... which ironically is ranked highly on my achievements list for 2004.

I believe the post-exam activities that I thought of conducting in classes are going to be very interesting, with students remembering the happy moments for a long time. And it is going to be enjoyable for me too. But again, I am a relief teacher.... and will not be with them through to their crucial 'O' or 'N' Levels exams. These games, quizzes.... build bonds, break walls and really, it is vital for their own teachers to conduct these activities.... they certainly have more ideas than me. After working hard with the students for one year, these are breathers for both parties. So I am not very keen at substituting the teachers during these precious moments. However, if circumstances have improved and the school need my service, I would not say no.... if the school need help, means the school need help. Just hope that teachers are all healthy and course-free during the post-exam period.

My one month in ADSS has been an eye-opener. I used to think teaching is an easy job.... as in a teacher only works for half a day, get to enjoy at least 50% of 12 weeks of school holidays, etc. Actually.... lessons need to be prepared, syllabus need to be planned, marking is tedious and annoying sometimes, courses take away time with the family and friends, poor performance by students requires explanation and action, counselling for troubled students, remedial classes for weaker one. On top of these, there are CCAs to be in charge of. Meetings, special events, secondary duties in school.... the list goes on. The job is of course satisfying, but none the less easy.

My one month would not been so enriching if not of the teachers. Like to express gratitude to HOD Science for inviting me to his class to observe how he engage his students and the few teachers who "interrupted" me during my lesson.... everytime they speak, I learn something. Must not forget the students too, because without them, a school is only an office for teachers. They make it a learning hub.

All good things must come to an end, permanently or temporarily. I look forward to seeing the Guiding Lights again. For now, let me wish them a successful final year exams and happy holidays ahead.

Singing Teachers

I remember one of my physics lecturers in junior college, Mr. Loo, who sang a song written by himself about himself during lecture to get us inspired and motivated to do well for the A levels exams. That performance generated so much attention, laughter and cheers.... really, not many of us know of any teacher who would sing during lesson, especially when we are expecting all the "chiminologies" to be thrown on our faces. Knowing how interested we are at his singing, he promised to sing a song during each remedial lesson which students have an option not to attend.

This morning, I replicated his feat with 1E2, albeit not under similar mood and atmosphere. Mr. Loo did his stuff while all of us were on guard with our pens and lecture pads. Sec 1E2 already knew they are going to have a stress-relieving, enjoyable 2 periods with me for General Knowledge Quiz which I spent about one hour plus to prepare.... that is after 2 periods of solid, self-revision (Solid right, 1E2?). However, none would expect any special performance.... and that obviously came as a pleasant surprise. Well, I cannot sing for no reason. One of the questions in the quiz is about the Yellow Ribbon Project and I offered bonus points for the team who knows how to sing the song which inspires this project. The song is "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree" by Dawn. I am prepared to sing and introduce this song which I like since all the students are still babies when I first listen to the song.... having the Sec.1 P.C. Wu listening to oldies is unusual enough, it may well be a rediscovery of the dodo to find a Sec 1 student in 2004 who knows of this song. Anyway, even if a student knows and dare to sing aloud, I would still want to sing it.... because it is rare, it is rediscovery of the dinosaurs and it makes them happy. And I just feel like a Singapore Idol when they cheered.

That is certainly one of my finest hours with the students and I am reconsidering my option to stop relief teaching until next year to prepare for my December exams.... when I know there can be so much fun in school with the worries of examination temporary behind the students' mind. During the assembly when students were singing the 3 inspirational songs, there is hint of a Singapore Idol-like competition by the teacher in charge.... Now, how about having the teachers as guest performers?

Songs that Inspire

The Power of Dream by Celine Dion
"The power of the dream
The faith in things unseen
The courage to embrace your fear
No matter where you are
To reach for your own star
To realize the power of the dream"

If We Hold On Together by Diana Ross
"Don't lose your way
With each passing day
You've come so far
Don't throw it away
Live believing
Dreams are for weaving
Wonders are waiting to start
Live your story
Faith, hope & glory
Hold to the truth in your heart"

I Believe I Can Fly by R. Kelly
'If I can see it, then I can do it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it
I believe I can fly

I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day
Spread my wings and fly away
I believe I can soar
I see me running through that open door
I believe I can fly"

Foreign Maids

Watched yesterday's evening news and the report about an Indonesian maid sentenced to life imprisonment for killing her employer's mother-in-law caught my attention. Last week, we have another maid sentenced to the same punishment for almost the same crime. I would say such happenings are not unexpected considering that we are ranked highly for being lousy foreign maid employers. What shocks me ,as the news is telecasted, is the response of the victim's son when asked how he feel about the punishment. If I am right, he said something like this,"We already know she won't die because she is under 18 at that time.... (Shaking his head and making a sound as if to say their desire to have her dead is not fulfilled).....". At first thought.... how can he have such thoughts. I admired his honesty on national TV though. But after further "analysis", it is understandable. It may not be a thirst for revenge, but rather, the unfairness (as he perceived) that she is getting away with the wrongdoing.... and she is appealing!! I thought the verdict is fair.... after knowing that she appealed (a.k.a. unwilling to accept consequence of her actions), I have less sympathy for her circumstances.

However, in my opinion, some (or more) fingers should be pointed at the employers, even if they are victims to some extent, as in the above cases. For the maid, what are the purposes of coming to a foreign land to work? Certainly not to commit some wrongdoings, get oneself in jail and thus no money to send home for their families. Some employers may like to say that they are not trained and too defient to be trained.... I got no idea how they conclude that their maid are supposed to be well-trained. If they are too defient, just send them back. These maid are young, less educated and basically alone in a different environment and culture. Employers in bringing them in for their service have every responsibility to take care or take charge of their well-being like their parents or older siblings. So potentially, if anything goes wrong, the one in charge must have been negligent in carrying out his/her responsibility. Or worse.... abusive behaviors.... I think that relevant errant employer can save legal fees and taxpayers' money and face the music as attentively as they listen to a seminar on "How Be A Millionaire??". Again, remember that if we have a lousy boss, we only face them (the most) 8 hours a day, 5 times a week. For maids, they are under the same roof with their employers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Preventable, but not prevented.... just a casual remark.

Needless to say (but I am still saying), most of the employers and maids do have happy working relationships.... but no one can deny that the statistics can be better. And just as the population is getting greyer, the foreign maid levy being decreased and more foreign maids are expected here, it is becoming more important for potential employers to ask themselves how professional and ethical are they as foreign maid employers. And if something like this happen again, news centre may reserve more space for the photos of the employers.

Please feel free to give your comments.

Dragon Splitting Into Singapore River

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival to all readers of Eliwupc's World!

For me, this year's celebration will be with my girlfriend on the hill beside Sembawang Town Council/Yishun Library.... more affectionately known as Lovers' Hill. This would be the 3rd year in a row we are celebrating there by hanging two rows of traditional paper lanterns between two trees. Such exhibit do draw praises from passers-by and negative comments from people who seems to be dissent that they are not the creators of such beautiful sight. Since starting this way of celebration, I have this thought of encouraging those who stop to admire the lanterns to do this too next year, or ,better, to make their own giant lanterns to display (Mainly for the older folks who are not working).... no prizes, no sponsors..... just start doing things for ourselves. Or maybe children can make their own lantern to display.... this will promote a closer relationship between the child and his family who help him out and prevent them from celebrating by burning candles, rubbish and anything burnable or throwing burning sparkles when they grow older.

Maybe I will start talking to admirers of our creations later this evening. And that reminds me to bring a few long sticks later to give out a few lanterns to 3 or 4 years old children who does not have a lantern in hand. Please don't rain.

P.C.@AHM 04' "RAW!!"

This is taken about 20m away from the finish line when my legs were telling me that I need to stop finish line or not. Great job, P.C.!

Keep on Running.... Keep on Running.

Woke up to a brand new day while most of Singapore are still in their dreams.... it feels good to have a headstart. But the purpose of waking up earlier this morning, as you know, is for the Army Half Marathon 2004. I have a friend who also ran the 21km.... Mr. Riccardo Tan (picture below), my primary and secondary classmate, now a regular with the Air Force. However, we ran for different categories and started at different time. With so many runners, it is difficult to take note of each other and run side-by-side and possibly cross the finish line together. It does bring comfort, thought, to have a friend to go for the run together, running that same distance and that same route.... and then meeting up at the end point to congratulate each other.
Posted by Hello

My aim of not slowing down to walk is achieved, but that does not contribute to a faster timing (which I thought would). In fact, I completed the run in 2hr 29 minutes.... about 15 minutes slower than my first AHM last year. Riccardo ran better and finished in 2 hrs 23 minutes which is reasonably well for a first-timer. Congratulations again, mate!

I couldn't say whether this year's run or last year's is more difficult.... Last year, while I finished sooner, I walked quite a distance. and this year, while I finished later, I am able to muster some strength to keep running or jogging. I think I have such thoughts last year.... Towards the 5km mark, I was asking myself, "Why the hell am I putting myself through this?". At the 8km mark, 50th minute, I thought of how I am going to handle Singapore Marathon later this year and why the hell did I sign for that. But after that, it was all "Keep running! Keep running!" And really this reflects how most of us react when doing something new or not normally done.... initially, it could be painful.... adapting, learning. Although some of us can handle this well, it is human nature to find this process unbearable.... With patience and persistence, all these can be conquered and goals be achieved. You heard of this somewhere, didn't you.... but to experience it before any important opportunity walks out of your door is such a privilige.

Up next would be the Johor-Singapore 2nd Link Bridge Run. This time, it will be a fun run just to admire the scenery of the 2nd Link and introduce my girlfriend to long-distance running. If time allows, Singapore tallest vertical marathon at 73-storey Swissotel The Stamford, Southeast Asia's tallest hotel, would be next. If not, it will be the Singapore Marathon to summarise the fruitful year.

Pre-run message

For the first time in a long time, I will run in the early morning. For the first time in a long time, I will witness how fast I can go. Hello people from the Army, Air Force and Navy, my number tag is A548. Keep running.... Follow me.

Romantic Camera

Do not mention about all the benefits of a digital camera. We just love this gadget because it gives us instant results.... we can review our picture instantly and print it instantly with a portable photo printer. We know exactly what we are supposed to do next, on the spot, for a nice picture. No need to guess, no need to wait. Also, the increased capabilities and functions means most trigger-happy users do not really need to connect with the subject to capture its essence. With these, we bid farewell to the romantic element of photography.

Ranchus for Adoption?

Posted by Hello

I actually wanted to post this message as an invitation for you to adopt 3 of my ranchus. My 30cm fish tank is becoming too small for 2 medium-sized ranchus, 5 growing ranchus and 1 small red-headed oranda.

The 3 ranchus I am putting up for adoption are growing bigger, taking up more space and might pose a threat to its smaller kind. Potential owners would have to be someone who has my handphone number and pledge to adhere to stringent requirements. However, after typing the first two lines of my messages, I decide not to invite.

After being introduced into the house for 3 or 4 months, I have treated them as if they are parentless children which I adopted. I would be very proud to present them as gift to someone, but that someone may not have the time to maintain their living environment. And they being fishes of little monetary value are easy to take granted of.

Anyway, since I have uploaded the picture, I might as well not delete it and let you have a look. The water has just been changed.... this is done once every 6-7 days.

Racing Colours - Sheares Bridge Run & Army Half Marathon 2004

This will be my racing outfits for the half-marathon held this Sunday, starting at The Esplanade and ending at The Padang: Unbranded event running singlet and Asics running shorts.

I have initially wanted to have an Asics running singlet as my top for its good brand and not-too-expensive price. However, a delay in purchase and late notice of the Asics clearance sales left me with odd sizes for my money. It is a blessing in disguise I supposed since I already seen some runners wearing that same design during the Nike Real Run.

Earlier on, I have bought an FBT white singlet to complement my FBT black shorts. And with the non-availability of Asics, it is almost certain that I would wear these FBT outfits, which are intended for training runs. This is provided the AHM Running Expo, the pre-run event where runners will collect their number tags and event kits, has nothing to offer. This unbranded event running singlet caught my eyes during the Expo and I made it mine as a momento. But with such good quality and simple design, the FBTs will remain as training outfits for now.

As expected, I will be wearing my best running shoes ever, Asics Cumulus, for the run. This pair of shoes only arrived early enough for the Singapore Marathon in Dec 2003 and that means it will be her first run for this event.

For 4D yuppies, you may want to place a bet on my number tag. I do not know how you are going to make it into four digits, since it has only three digits. This applies to those who feel lucky too. If you lose, do not send me the tickets for claims. If you win, do not forget the charities.

In view of my lack of preparation, I have set no quantifiable target for this run. This is also to lessen the burden of my audience who really want to bet on my number tag. I walked a couple of times last year.... so possibly my target this year is just to keep running.

Log on this Sunday afternoon for the results of my run.

The World's No.1 Musical Is In Town!!!!

Learnt of this musical when my father bought the ABBA GOLD Greatest Hits CD about 4 years ago. At that time, it was a new musical, but I have this feeling that it will be a hit.

First, it is based on the songs of ABBA... and ABBA as you know has a huge fan base, "tall fan structure". I mean... not only are their admirers spreaded across the world, people of all ages enjoy their music. No rationale admirer would want to miss the chance to watch a musical which only perform their favourite songs of their favourite band.

And then it is their music, clear singing and simple lyrics. Music... serious musical audiences seek enrichment for the soul or widening of their minds, but most audiences are like me and you who really just want to feel happy after a show... and ABBA music are happy music. Clear singing and simple lyrics are a must for musicals. Remember that musicals are mind widener, not brain teaser. It is unnecessary to take attention away from the good acting by requesting audience to decipher what the actors are singing about. Their songs are meant to be chart-toppers, but it seems their songs are written for a musical.... they were chart-toppers and now it is performed in a musical.

I could remember clearly that "Money, Money, Money" was performed by the Music, Dance and Drama Club of my secondary school in a concert. One of my best friends in school was the main performer and she sing and throw "money" in the air. I enjoyed the performance by the club... my eyes were just glued to the stage... I think I wouldn't even know if someone throw something into my mouth. Well, nobody did it.... that means even the most restless of students are enjoying the show.

Therefore, it comes to no surprise that Mamma Mia! has became the No.1 musical in the world.... not stated in their publicity brochure, I read it off an article in The Straits Times. What is more surprising to me is the fact that they are coming to perform in Singapore.

At that time I came to know of Mamma Mia!, it was performed at Prince Edward Theatre in London. I thought there is not much chance for me to watch this musical. And throughout the following years, Mamma Mia! is just something that exists in this world and a musical that I would catch if I have the chance to go for a holiday to London. I forgot that performing groups also need to earn money and they do travel around the world like The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserable (Did I spell it wrong?), etc. Imagine the joy when I read from Life!, about half a year ago, that Mamma Mia! is coming to Singapore.... dates of their performance and ticket sales went straight to my organiser.

And today is only less than one week before their first performance in Singapore kicks off.... that is 21 September 2004, with their last show on 24 October 2004. If you have not been to the Esplanade Theatre... make your first time with Mamma Mia!. I have checked with SISTIC and tickets are still available.... certainly not the best seats, but comfortable enough for you to enjoy the whole show. Songs that will be featured includes "Dancing Queen", "I Have A Dream", "Mamma Mia", "Money, Money, Money", "Take A Chance On Me"and "Thank You For the Music". Log on to
www.sistic.com.sg for more information and discounts you may enjoy.

I will only get to watch it towards the end of their tour in Singapore and by the time my review is published (if there is one), their tour may have ended. I hope I have written enough to convince you that this is a smart bet.... such experience can rarely be bought with money. Don't miss the opportunity.

Welcome, students of ADSS.

Hello, there!

I have since only told one class from ADSS of my blogspot and if one of you from Sec 1e1 is reading this, do drop a line. Is it Sec 1e1? Someone correct me if I am wrong.
Anyway, you seems to enjoy ghost stories. Quite shamefully, being a loyal supporter of True Singapore Ghost Stories during my younger years, I am not able to replicate any of the stories to you. Being touched by the decent level of energy and enthuasism during my one period with you, I have since got a few good ghost stories standby to share with you (if I have the opportunity). But, it cannot always be ghost stories with me... we have more interesting things in this world to learn and talk about.
Something for you:
"Better to be prepared for an opportunity,
than to have an opportunity and not prepared".
The statement could sound passive. Do bear in mind that some opportunities are created.
Enjoy your time in school!
